vancouver pillow fight

pillow fights are an undeniably good thing. i totally wanted to go to this flash-mob pillow fight in vancouver on saturday (few hundred people show up with hidden pillows, pillows come out at 3pm sharp, crazed whacking begins, cloud of feathers, at 3:15pm everyone scatters), but it conflicted with my meditation class. thanks to the internet however i can live vicariously though someone’s home movie (check it out) of the delicious rambunctiousness and hope that the next one fits my schedule…

here’s a video clip of a san francisco pillow fight that took place about a month ago.

update: looks like there’s been a bunch more vids posted. nice.

i am done with violence

Wow, this piece by Mark Morford, called I Am Done With Violence really struck a chord.

After seeing the parade of violence of the movie Ultraviolet (visually stunning though it may be), I’m left with the same feeling. I can’t help but feel that scenes of brutality appeal to some dark part of my soul, and suck away a bit of my humanity. Of course, violence is real - it is part of our experience - but I think there’s a difference between violence perceived directly, and perceiving violence from the spectator’s seat. This spectacle is addictive on several levels: it is a surrogate for a strong spiritual connection to our body and to the earth, it is escapism, it is a narcotic. I’d like to lower the amount of violent spectacle in my life - I don’t need it like I don’t need junk food.

spring is coming

Ecostreet reports: Permaculture Series Starts Soon on BBC2 - hope I can download some episodes.

Bloglines is the cool. They surprised me with a new “edit interface for my feeds that is all AJAXy with drag-and-drop. Makes me happy when a tried-and-true User Interface that I use a lot gets even better.

A note to all my non-geeky friends out there, if you don’t use Bloglines, or some other aggregator, you really need to look into this technology. I say this only because I know many non-geeks who have not heard of feeds or aggregators. If you regularly read news or blogs online, it will make your life way, way easier.

That’s it for now.

Spring is coming…

Spring is coming…

Spring is coming…

taxes

I just did my taxes. For the last 4 or 5 years I have done them online at UFile.ca. It’s awesome. If you have a fairly straightforward tax return, you can file very quickly. UFile does all the work… and it costs about $15. Plus it remembers my information from last year, making it even faster. It even works if you’re self-employed. No reason to go to an accountant unless you have a very complicated tax return, in my opinion. UFile is cheap, easy and fast.

The downside of tax season for me this year is that I didn’t put much money aside for income tax when I was a contractor last year and I now owe the gov several thousand dollars. My year of contract work taught me many hard lessons - and this is one of them. I’m not very disciplined with money. This is something I’m working on. I would like to try contract work again someday, and come at it with more wisdom, more clarity around what kind of work I want to do, how I want to do it, and how I organize myself and track everything. All that darn responsibility that comes with freedom :) .
