taxes
I just did my taxes. For the last 4 or 5 years I have done them online at UFile.ca. It’s awesome. If you have a fairly straightforward tax return, you can file very quickly. UFile does all the work… and it costs about $15. Plus it remembers my information from last year, making it even faster. It even works if you’re self-employed. No reason to go to an accountant unless you have a very complicated tax return, in my opinion. UFile is cheap, easy and fast.
The downside of tax season for me this year is that I didn’t put much money aside for income tax when I was a contractor last year and I now owe the gov several thousand dollars. My year of contract work taught me many hard lessons - and this is one of them. I’m not very disciplined with money. This is something I’m working on. I would like to try contract work again someday, and come at it with more wisdom, more clarity around what kind of work I want to do, how I want to do it, and how I organize myself and track everything. All that darn responsibility that comes with freedom
